Hiking the Appalachians=Ugandan discussions

Back when I lived in the UK, I often picked up a copy of Private Eye. It was a cheapishly-done but amusing fortnightly magazine, run by Peter Cook for a while. One typically English - read that obtuse - feature is that anyone having an illicit affair was described as "discussing Uganda".

Now that Mark Sanford has become Irritating Politician du jour, Craig Ferguson has suggested that "hiking the Appalachians" be a new and semi-discreet way to describe an illicit liaison. His monologue about Sanford was quite entertaining. It's 7 minutes long but worth the investment in time. Here's a link to it.

If recording Craig Ferguson wouldn't fill up my Tivo so quickly I'd do it, but the problem is that like any other late-night comic, he has funny nights and dull nights. Although I still hold he is considerably funnier than his competitors. When visiting a friend in LA a few years ago, we went to a taping of Craig Ferguson. There are three things I remember about the event: a) Ferguson is quite a decent person off-camera; b) I wasn't aware that audiences were arranged according to how well-dressed they were; and c) Ferguson's makeup looked horribly orange to me. It's odd how the orange TV makeup phenomenon works. How does videotape cancel out that horrid orange tinge so that the actors/hosts/etc look perfectly normal when you're watching them at home?
